- 1 bottle full-bodied red wine (non-alcoholic works, too)
- 1/2 – 3/4 cup (1 – 2 dl) sugar (to taste)
- 2 cinnamon sticks (or 1 tsp ground cinnamon)
- 1 small piece fresh ginger (or 1/2 tsp ground ginger)
- 5 – 10 cardamom pods (or 1 tsp ground cardamom)
- 10 whole cloves (or 1/2 tsp ground cloves)
- 2 – 3 pieces fresh or dried citrus peel
Heat wine and spices just to the point of boiling. Add sugar to taste. Remove from heat and allow to steep for 5-10 minutes, then strain (optional). Serve in small cups with blanched almonds and raisins (optional).
