Glögg (Swedish Mulled Wine)

INGREDIENTS :

  • 1 bottle full-bodied red wine (non-alcoholic works, too)
  • 1/2 – 3/4 cup (1 – 2 dl) sugar (to taste)
  • 2 cinnamon sticks (or 1 tsp ground cinnamon)
  • 1 small piece fresh ginger (or 1/2 tsp ground ginger)
  • 5 – 10 cardamom pods (or 1 tsp ground cardamom)
  • 10 whole cloves (or 1/2 tsp ground cloves)
  • 2 – 3 pieces fresh or dried citrus peel

INSTRUCTIONS :

  • Heat wine and spices just to the point of boiling. Add sugar to taste.
  • Remove from heat and allow to steep for 5-10 minutes, then strain (optional).
  • Serve in small cups with blanched almonds and raisins (optional).
