Potato Gratin

TYPE : French
Casserole
YIELD : 8 servings
CALORIES : 436 kcal
PREP TIME : 15 minutes
COOK TIME : 1 hour
TOTAL TIME : 1 hour 15 minutes

INGREDIENTS :

  • 10 medium-sized starchy potatoes (I prefer Yukon Gold)
  • 1 small yellow onion, chopped
  • 3 – 4 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 2 cups (5 dl) heavy cream, or half-and-half
  • 1 cup (2.5 dl) shredded cheese (a good melting cheese, like Monterey Jack)
  • 1 1/2 – 2 tsp salt
  • pinch of black pepper

INSTRUCTIONS :

  • Set the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  • Peel and slice the potatoes thinly with a mandolin or knife.
  • Mix potatoes with chopped onion, minced garlic, salt and pepper and place in an oven-safe casserole dish. If you want a more decorative looking dish, reserve half of the potato slices and arrange them neatly on top.
  • Add the cream and top with shredded cheese.
  • Bake until the potatoes feel soft, about 50 – 60 minutes. If the top browns too quickly, protect it with a piece of aluminium foil.

NOTES :

Using half-and-half reduces the calorie count to 352 kcal per serving but makes it a little less creamy.

For some reason I have a hard time finding this in restaurants in the USA, it’s weird since it’s one of the best ways todo potatoes (Hasselbacks is still my fav).
