Janssons Frestelse (Potato-Anchovy Casserole)

This dish was supposedly a favorite of the 19th century Swedish opera singer Per Adolf “Pelle” Janzon. It is delicious any time of the year, but has a given place on the Swedish julbord (Christmas table). My version is creamy with only a hint of anchovy.

Ground Beef for Meatballs & Patties

Swedish meatballs seem to be the trademark of Swedish cuisine and we do eat them every now and then. They are also a staple on the Swedish smörgåsbord and julbord (Christmas table). However, this recipe can also be used for moist and flavorful patties, meatloaf and fillings.

Ris à la Malta (Swedish Rice Pudding)

Make a lot of rice porridge so you have enough left over for this delicious Christmas dessert! Mix with whipped cream, vanilla and sugar, this chilled pudding is smooth and airy. We always serve it with fruit sauce for some sweet, tangy contrast.

Menu: Swedish Julbord

Julbord is basically a Swedish smörgåsbord and it should be enjoyed one section at a time with new, clean plates in between. Every family has their own traditions, but these are the dishes we serve in our house.

Glögg (Swedish Mulled Wine)

Nothing brings me a greater sense of Christmas than the scent of warm glögg. Hot, sweetened red wine seasoned with fragrant holiday spices like cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, cloves and citrus served in small cups with blanched almonds and raisins.

Lussekatter (Swedish Saffron Buns)

Vetebröd (Swedish Sweet Bread) with saffron and raisins is baked for advent, Lucia and Christmas. There are many different shapes, but the most common is the S-shaped lussekatt or julgalt.

Simple Panettone

I was first introduced to this traditional Italian Christmas treat in the USA, but now it can be found in Swedish stores as well. My recipe comprises Swedish sweet bread dough flavored with citrus and dried fruit. It is remarkably similar to authentic Panettone in both flavor and looks.
